Obama Leadership Capacities

The moral purpose of Barak Obama can be seen from his inaugural speech. President Obama (2009) said, “With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come.” He has given hope and acknowledged the tough times in future. In addition, he has effectively utilized strategies to mobilize people and earn their trust. He has made clear to the American public their role and his duty during his tenure in the Whitehouse.

Obama during the Super Tuesday speech Obama (2008) said, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or we wait for some other time, we are the ones we have been waiting for”. He has clear vision and is leading our nation with emphasis to make a change and adopt it with optimism.

Obama has established great relationships around the world in a very short time. President Obama remarked (2009), “And so to all the other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.” Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize is the recognition of his extraordinary efforts to strengthen the international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.

Obama (2009) stated that principles of justness of our cause, humility, and restraint must be at the heart of future interactions with and among nations. He reaches out to the people on an individual level and encourages them to build strong communities and share the knowledge.

  1. I believe that President Obama has a true understanding of change. In many of the speeches that he has made, (including the one you quoted “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or we wait or some other time, we are the ones we have been waiting for”)President Obama has displayed his understanding of the complexities of this process.
I agree with you that by receiving the Nobel peace prize reiterates the fact of his understanding of change and how he needs strong relationships within Washington and the world. It is great to have a vision, but if you do not have the support needed, change will never happened. President Obama has all characteristics of a great leader.

  2. One may not agree with the politics of President Obama but few can argue that his interpersonal and communication skills are not outstanding. He can communicate with the country and other leaders in a way that I feel that he is talking directly to me. He is calm under pressure and is not intimidated in anyway by his audience. It is true that unless you have support your goals will not be achieved. In America it is important to come to a middle ground, which I feel he is learning through trial and error in his first year of his Presidency. His persona and communication skills make him an outstanding leader.

  3. I have rarely felt as optimistic as the day Barack Obama was elected president. Our country was finally able to rise above race to elect(who I believe is)the best man for the job. Barack Obama has the vision and passion to transcend race and class and the necessary skills to bring together a nation long divided. He is an effective communicator able to engage and activate his audience. His presidential campaign enlivened a stagnant nation and he has given hope and purpose to the lives of millions who thought their voices would never be heard.

Oprah Winfrey was a huge supporter of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. The two leaders share the ability to convey their passion and their vision, to engage others in achieving that vision, and to effect change by living a life of purpose.

  4. Ikram,
I find Obama inspiring. His vision and his moral purpose are uplifting in a time when so few people are guided by morals. He uses his morals as a guide but does it with such humility. I feel that it is his humility that allows so many people to identify with him. For me, a middle-class white girl, to find him inspiring says a lot about his relate-ability!

  5. Obama has done an excellent job proving his investment in moral purpose, change, relationships and knowledge sharing. Can you think of any room for improvement? Possibly he can work on coherence. Brendan Dawes the leader I wrote about, also needs to work on coherence. Yet, the areas for improvement are very different.

I believe Obama's improved coherence could come in the form of public statements. Granted, I am sure it is very difficult to be President and promise anything, but I feel the backed himself out of some corners early in his presidency by claiming that promises could not be met because "change takes time". Overall he has my support. Yet, I feel he may have benefited from addressing individual issues rather than throwing the "change takes time" blanket over anything that fell through. We all have room to improve. I really had to reflect to think of this suggestion.

  6. Hi Ikram,

The guiding vision and the mobilization of so many is a vital quality of a leader. Through his identification of purpose and his coherence making, many Americans felt optimistic as pointed out by Zella. Building community and sharing knowledge are critical aspects of the change process. Building communities is the most effective method to bring about change. To do this with a guiding vision and moral purpose makes the opportunities for successful change all the more possible!

  7. Ikram,

Regarless of political opinion, President Obama captured the hearts and minds of Americans in his election bid. He embodied hope and inspiration in a way that few presidential candidates have shown. I remember being captivated by the moment and believed in the change he orated.

His success is a model for communication. In addition to his laudable speaking skills, his campaign innovatively used digital media. Social websites were organized to maximize fundraising and communicate his message.
